Verizon Producer Platform:

Centralizing the API Lifecycle

Creating a dedicated workspace for developers to centrally manage the end-to-end lifecycle of their APIs with colleagues with the API First Platform Producer Portal. These lifecycle activities include everything from API design, development and revision management to API documentation, testing, deployment and consumer support.

30-second Project summary

Your time is important to me and you look at a million of these every day… So here's a quick summary of the work I did on the Producer Platform.

Problem:

Verizon's development progress was slowed by a fragmented ecosystem that forced teams into constant context-switching and tedious onboarding. This lack of a unified workspace created major bottlenecks, delaying product launches and hindering effective collaboration.

Strategy:

The strategy focused on building a "Producer Portal" that consolidates the entire API lifecycle into a single environment to eliminate administrative overhead and context-switching. By utilizing an agile process of discovery, high-fidelity prototyping, and rigorous task-based usability testing, the project ensured the final design directly addressed developer friction before entering development.

Business Result:

The Producer Portal transformed Verizon’s operations by eliminating administrative friction and drastically reducing developer onboarding times. This shift toward core innovation fueled a massive cultural success, resulting in an 800% increase in successful API deployments within the first year.

My leadership contributions:

Platform Lead: Owned the design system and UI for all platform-facing pages.

IA & Strategy: Defined information architecture and core user personas through rigorous competitive analysis and market research.

UX Writing: Directed content strategy and UX writing while auditing technical documentation for consistency.

Usability Testing: Facilitated user testing sessions and spearheaded iterative design updates based on findings.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Worked alongside back-end developers to align design goals with security protocols.

Overview:

I led the UX strategy and design system for a centralized workspace that consolidated Verizon’s fragmented API toolchain. By transforming siloed technical hurdles into intuitive, human-centered workflows, we accelerated enterprise innovation and significantly reduced administrative friction.

Impact at a glance:

Consolidation: Migrated 5 siloed legacy portals into a single source of truth.

Efficiency: Reduced developer onboarding time by over 400%.

Scalability: Standardized documentation and deployment for all internal API products.

The problem:

Verizon’s development landscape was hindered by a fragmented ecosystem. Teams faced constant context-switching and cumbersome onboarding processes. This lack of a unified workspace created significant bottlenecks, delaying time-to-market and complicating cross-functional collaboration.

The Mission:

Build a "Producer Portal" that empowers developers to manage the entire API lifecycle—design, testing, deployment, and support—within a single, high-performance environment.

The Process:

Bridging Research & Reality

I acted as the Platform Lead, bridging the gap between technical constraints and user needs.

  • Discovery: Conducted rigorous competitive analysis and market research to define core user personas.

  • Testing: Facilitated task-based usability sessions with developers. We mocked up core tasks—like onboarding and deploying revisions—to identify UI friction before a single line of code was written.

  • Iteration: Used continuous feedback loops to refine complex interactions, ensuring the consolidated design actually eliminated administrative overhead rather than just rearranging it.

Architecting for Complexity:

Great UX starts with a clear plan

This information architecture maps out a highly detailed "Producer Platform," designed specifically to support the complex workflows of developers and administrators who create, publish, and govern APIs. Branching from the central homepage, the structure is dominated by a deeply nested, expansive "API Management" pillar that provides granular, step-by-step pathways for the entire API lifecycle—ranging from initial creation and environment configuration to policy enforcement, versioning, and monetization.

Surrounding this core operational hub are supporting top-level branches for managing overarching API "Products," tracking performance metrics, accessing technical "Resources," and navigating "Support." Overall, the deep vertical drill-downs and extensive sub-menus reflect a highly technical, utility-driven environment focused heavily on backend administrative control, lifecycle governance, and detailed configurations rather than high-level discovery.

User research:

Agile Strategy: Bridged the gap between research findings and a tangible solution by visualizing the new, unified workspace before committing to development.

Task-Based User Testing: Brought the interactive models back to developers and technical leads to observe them navigating the mocked-up Producer Portal (testing core tasks like onboarding, documentation management, and deploying revisions).

Iterative Refinement: Leveraged continuous feedback loops to identify lingering UI friction, refine complex interactions, and validate that the consolidated design successfully eliminated administrative overhead and context-switching.

Prototyping:

Agile Strategy: Bridged the gap between research findings and a tangible solution by visualizing the new, unified workspace before committing to development.

Structural Wireframing: Rapidly translated the newly optimized workflows into low-fidelity structural wireframes to establish the foundational architecture.

High-Fidelity Interactive Prototypes: Developed clickable models in Figma that accurately simulated the end-to-end API lifecycle.
